Numatic International was founded in 1969 in Crewkerne, Somerset, England. It's first vacuum cleaner was designed for cleaning coal, oil and gas fired boilers. At the beginning the factory was as small as a garage where only 6 people were worked round the clock. The first vacuum cleaner designs were made from a combination of oil drums and components that were readily available such as suitcase handles, furniture castors and domestic washing-up bowls.
By 1971 Numatic moved into a water-mill in Yeovil, Somerset (their sales had grown enough), and there they learnt a lot about wet pick-up machines. Sometimes the river level was high and the factory flooded, but production continued. At that period the first serious commercial vacuum cleaner was developed, the NV-2, followed very closely by the original NV-250. The majority of those steel machines are still working today (33 years later), and Numatic can still supply parts and replacements for all their vacuum cleaners.
By 1973 they produced their first floor machine and wet and dry cleaners, based on components that could be purchased from existing suppliers. By 1974 they moved to the home in Beaminster, Dorset where they stayed for 20 years. In 1981 they produced Henry, the product for which Numatic is famous throughout the world, with sales increasing year by year since it's run.

In 1990 Numatic was mainly assembling products from components supplied by sub-contractors in metal and plastic, and then they branched out with their own tube manipulation facility to make improved, stronger, commercial products.
