If you use a 2 core flex and don't have an earth wire, plus the lampholder is held in place by a metal fitting, then you will need to use this E27 Isolator to help protect any damage to the wires on the metal fitting.
The E27 Lampholder Isolator also protects from any possible shorting out of the wires to any metal parts in the cap of the lampholder.
